All four of our Learning Centers (Canaan, Hardwick, Newport and St. Johnsbury) as well as our satellite offices in Island Pond and Gilman offer three high school diploma/equivalency programs:
1. The Vermont Adult Diploma Program (VADP)
2. The High School Completion Program (HSCP)
3. The General Education Development Program (GED)
Successfully completing the Adult Diploma Program (VADP) or the High School Completion Program (HSCP) will result in a high school diploma issued by your local high school. The General Education Development Program (GED) leads to a credential that is nationally recognized as the equivalent to a diploma.
The three programs differ in purpose and entry requirements. Typically students decide between them after an in-depth orientation session at one of our learning centers. The information here provides only a broad overview of each program. Please click on the buttons to the left for a more detailed description. Contact the learning center of your choice for additional information or to schedule an orientation:
The Vermont Adult Diploma Program (VADP) is designed for individuals age 21 or older (age 18 – 20 with special waiver). Motivated and independent students research and complete 5 projects under supervision of the regional VADP assessor. The program is free and available to students who are not enrolled in high school.
The High School Completion Program (HSCP) is designed for students between age 16 and 22 who want to complete their high school course work outside of a conventional high school. Working closely with the High School Completion Program Plan Manager, the student develops a plan based on his/her interests and goals that also fulfills the requirements of the cooperating high school. The program is free and available both to students who are enrolled or not enrolled in school.
The General Educational Development program (GED) leads to a secondary diploma equivalency. It is available to any student age 16 or older who is not enrolled in school. Students study for and then pass a series of five standardized test. Study for these tests can be done independently or in the learning center in close cooperation with our teaching staff. There is a small charge for each test, but instruction is free.
Our Introduction to Computers class leads newcomers to the world of information technology to a basic
understanding of all components involved as well as to an introduction to word processing and the internet. Typically, the class runs for two months and meets twice a week.
Academic Skills Development is geared towards students who need to improve educational functioning levels in reading, mathematics or writing. Whether it is to qualify for any of the above mentioned diploma/equivalency programs, to prepare for the AccuPlacer or to simply improve job qualifications, our teachers and tutors are ready and eager to work with anyone who wants to work on his or her skills.
