The High School Completion Program (HSCP) is a collaboration between local high schools and Learning Works, Vermont’s network of Adult Education and Literacy Programs (AEL). The program provides a path to a high school diploma for young adults when a conventional high school education has proven unsuccessful. Program participants include both those who have left school and students who remain enrolled in their partnering high school. Usually, when students do remain enrolled in school, significant portions of their work will be done with the high school as well as with the AEL partner.
INDIVIDUAL GRADUATION PLAN
The HSCP Plan Manager and the student work closely together to identify the student’s long-range personal and career goals. They then develops an education plan that offers engaging, effective and relevant learning experiences that address these student goals while at the same time satisfying the high school’s graduation requirements. Department of Education policy specifies that these education plans are NOT merely a reflection of what’s offered in a conventional high school, but instead offer unique educational experiences that would not be possible within the high school environment. DOE also requires that the plans must emphasize skills and knowledge, not credits and “seat time.” They must address the student’s goals for the future, and include experiences such as career exploration, work readiness training and/or preparation for college or other post-secondary training. Each plan is as unique as the student for whom it’s written. As the program has matured, high schools have increasingly approved creative approaches to learning that also maintain the standards they expect of their graduates.
QUALIFYING FOR THE PROGRAM
To enter this program, you must be at least 16 and no older than 22. You will need to demonstrate on standardized assessments that you are capable of academic work at a satisfactory level in reading, writing and math (NRS 4). If you fall short of this level, WE WILL HELP YOU TO DEVELOP THOSE SKILLS UNTIL YOU MEET THAT GOAL. Typically, a successful candidate will have already earned at least half of the credits required for graduation. However, there are exceptions to every rule. A high level of motivation and a willingness to work independently are the most important factors for success in this program.
